Sadhana Professional Courses

A few courses of a professional nature are offered every year primarily for former ICP students. Intended to complement their professional skills, these are both practical in content and relatively new in the discipline. Non-ICP participants are accepted only when they are known to be involved in professional counselling work and can demonstrate that adequate personal counselling work has been completed. These include :

   Dreamwork and the Inner Life
   Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

   Guided Imagery and Healing

   Psychological Assessment
   Living Our Dying
   Psychosynthesis
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
   Senses Wide Open
Psychology and the art of Healing

   Dreamwork and the Inner Life

Traditionally, psychologists have seen dreams as the "royal road to the unconscious". Dreams are also a somatic reality, a direct expression of the body's inner language. Dreams manifest what is seeking to come alive into the awake world of daily living, bringing the night to the day, restoring self-awareness and wholeness in life. The course will begin with an overview of prominent approaches to dreamwork but the focus will be on dreams as bodily experience rather than as symbol and interpretation. Admission is limited to those engaged in counselling and spiritual direction. Enrollment is limited and former ICP students will be given preference in admission to this course. Knowledge of Focusing is a pre-requisite.

   Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP is an artful technique for studying the subjective maps of inner experiences so that effective communication can become a matter of conscious choice. NLP is about how the brain works, how people think, feel, learn, motivate themselves, interact with others, make choices and achieve goals. It is an approach to communication that generates the widest range of flexibility and possibilities to produce the desired results in life.
This training in NLP covers concepts, skills and techniques and affords extensive practice in detection, utilization and alteration of the structure of subjective experiences through the technologies of NLP.

   Guided Imagery and Healing

Guided imagery is a potent tool for managing stress, unleashing our creativity, changing our attitudes, setting and reaching our goals, tapping into our inner wisdom and activating our healing powers. The course is meant for counsellors interested in probing specific issues in their own lives and well as helping others through the use of visualization.

   Psychological Assessment

The ability to make psychological evaluations is essential in the training of a competent psychotherapist. This course will introduce students to the basic concepts of psychological evaluation and train them in methods of rapid assessment in order to facilitate matched treatment effectiveness and differential psychotherapy. Special attention is paid to personality assessment using objective as well as projective methods of testing. Knowledge of psychopathology is a pre-requisite.

   Living Our Dying

Death is not merely the challenge of that inevitable end one must face with courage. It can also in fact be welcomed as the crown of life and the door to a fullness of freedom and love beyond imagination. One prepares oneself and others for death precisely by living life as fully, deeply, freely and lovingly as possible so that death is brought into the lives we live. In this course, appropriate caring and counselling will be stressed as well as bodily experiences associated with dying, death grief and eternal life.

   Psychosynthesis

The ability to make psychological evaluations is essential in the training of a competent psychotherapist. This course will introduce students to the basic concepts of psychological evaluation and train them in methods of rapid assessment in order to facilitate matched treatment effectiveness and differential psychotherapy. Special attention is paid to personality assessment using objective as well as projective methods of testing. Knowledge of psychopathology is a pre-requisite.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a new form of psychotherapy which accelerates the treatment of a wide range of pathologies and self-esteem issues related to both traumatic past events and present life conditions. These life events may include accidents, rape, molestation, catastrophic loss, combat and natural disasters. The method is effective in the rapid desensitization of traumatic memories, including a cognitive restructuring and significant reduction of symptoms such as emotional distress, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and night mares. The experiential training in EMDR aims at familiarizing participants with a wide spectrum of applications for comfortable and efficient use of the method. Since a clinical background is necessary for the application of EMDR, the course is limited to mental health professionals who are actively involved in working in therapeutic situations.

   Senses Wide Open

The Art and Practice of Living in Your Body with Johanna Putnoi

We rarely listen to the natural wisdom of the body. Most often we are distracted by what we can see and think about, ignoring the body's innate ability to let us know when we are in danger, to tell us when we have met a kindred spirit, to make it clear when we need nourishment, to let us know when it is time to rest or to experience the deepest pleasure.

The Somatic approach focuses on the connection between physical phenomena, cognition, and human capacity in general. It teaches that high-quality body function is developed and maintained by conscious awareness and is central to the development of our deep humanity.

This class combines both theory and practice. An overview of somatic theory will be presented and highlighted by engaging exercises that teach how to understand the body's language, soften body armour, drop old defences, enjoy the world with senses wide open, and unlock the gates to rediscovering the clarity, empathy, and joy of being human.

Psychology and the Art of Healing

People who work in hospitals or care for the chronically ill in their communities are daily in touch with the pain of those they serve and look for ways to alleviate it. Skills without compassion become mechanical and care without skill is inadequate. This course will be based on the conviction that disease need not be disaster but a re-direction of life. Using the framework of health psychology the course will introduce participants to areas such as behavioural management of chronic and terminally ill patients, psycho-spiritual approaches to coping with cancer, and the prevention and rehabilitation of heart disease. They will be introduced to the concept of mind-body healing, the role of hope, belief, love and spirituality in facilitating healing as well as to some specific skills of healing such as hypnosis, imagery, progressive relaxation and visualization.
